California gun laws allow most adult residents to purchase a firearm without a license. But people in the categories below are prohibited from gun ownership under state law:

  • Convicted felons
  • Narcotic addicts
  • Anyone with two or more convictions under Penal Code 417 (brandishing a weapon)
  • People convicted of specific misdemeanor offenses
  • The mentally ill
  • Minors (anyone under 18)

California also has strict laws against illegally carrying and using a firearm, namely:

  • Brandishing a weapon
  • Using a firearm to prevent or resist arrest
  • Inflicting bodily injury while brandishing a firearm
